Background
I am a 32 years old software developer working at Artlist, with modern web applications. I have been working as a software developer since 2015. I build web apps that is being used by millions of people around the world. I have worked more than a decade with code editors and design systems. One thing is very clear that the screen in front of you matters more than any other piece of hardware on your desk.
RetinaDesk is where I publish the monitor research I was already doing for my own setup. Only the monitors with Retina density actually earn a place next to a MacBook Pro or Mac Studio.
Why monitors
I work on a Macbook and I have always been a little obsessed with the desk and workstation setup. A lot of that traces back to TechSource's Setup Wars on YouTube. I have watched all those episodes for years. The most important piece of hardware that makes an entire setup looks good is the monitor. And that is where my deeper interest in displays began. The Mac ecosystem with high quality external monitors is something I really care about.
How I test
All monitor in my coverage gets at least one week of daily driving on current generation Apple silicon hardware. The checklist is consistent across all the review so the results are comparable.
- We check text rendering in native macOS apps like Pages, Xcode, Notes, Safari and Final Cut
- The color profiles and consistency across display specifications
- We also check for regular and pick brightness along with backlight bleeding issues
- Single cable Thunderbolt / USB-C setup behaviour with Mac"
- We Also test the included stand, speakers, webcam
- Long term eye comfort for full working days
What I will not do
I do not and will never accept any payment for rankings. Also I do not run sponsored reviews. A lot of users keeps faith on my reviews and I will never break their trust. Apple's only 32 inch 6K monitor. It launched in 2019 and discontinued in March 2026. Its headline features are 1000 nit sustained HDR with 1600 nit peak brightness, a 576 zone Mini LED backlight, and 11 factory calibrated P3 reference modes. Still stocked used on Amazon, and still one of the best 6K panels for colour critical Mac workflows.

It has height adjustable stand, dual Thunderbolt 4 with 96W charging and daisy chain support. DisplayHDR 400 at 70 Hz. Smart KVM and a Mac tuned color profile. Sadly there is no camera or good speakers. but you are saving $600.

Nothing else still on sale looks this much like a Pro Display XDR. Real glass, 223 PPI and 2000:1 on the glossy G32P for around $1699, or 218 PPI on the matte G32X for $1399. Lovely panels. But no dock, no speakers, no KVM, twelve months of warranty, and not one independent lab has measured either of them.

Large display with Retina density is now a better purchase for anyone rather than a studio display.
