About
Monitors for Mac. Nothing else.
RetinaDesk is a focused site covering exactly one niche: 5K and 6K external monitors compatible with modern Mac hardware. Every single monitors we review is evaluated on macOS. Tested on current MacBook Pro and Mac Studio systems. We don't cover 4K monitors, gaming monitors, ultrawides, or Windows focused displays. There are plenty of other sites for those. We also develop web tools that help Mac owners to understand the underline technologies and make decisions based on it.
Why such a narrow niche?
Because "best monitor for Mac" from many tech sites typically means "best 4K monitor". And that's the wrong answer for macOS. Apple's rendering pipeline was designed around 218 PPI Retina density. At 27 inches, only 5K hits that target. At 32 inches, only 6K does. Everything else is a compromise. Most reviewers will not tell you that and mislead the users.
How we test
Every monitor that we test gets at least one week of daily driving on a current generation MacBook Pro or Mac Studio. We evaluate-
- We check for text rendering in native macOS apps like Pages, Xcode, Notes and Safari
- Test color accuracy across Display P3, DCI-P3, and sRGB
- Regular and pick brightness across the panel
- Single cable USB-C / Thunderbolt behavior with various MacBook Pro models
- Included stand, speakers, webcam if available. And firmware update flow in different OS
- Long term eye comfort through an 8 hour workday
How we make money
RetinaDesk is a participates in the Amazon Associates program. When you buy a monitor through our Amazon link then we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This help us to continue our work and help you to get the best Mac experience.
Few things we will never do. We never accept payment for a ranking. We never take "sponsored reviews," or adjust our conclusions to match a manufacturer's preferred narrative. Every ranking on this site reflects what we'd genuinely recommend to a friend. Read our full affiliate disclosure.
What's not here
We deliberately do not cover:
- Monitors under 5K resolution which is wrong density for Mac
- Gaming focused high refresh monitors
- Ultrawide monitors have different use case, different math. We don't cover it
- Windows first monitors without any documented macOS support
If you're looking for any of the above then you can find a lot of good sites for each. This isn't one.
